We are retiring our Elasticsearch service

Two years after launching managed OpenSearch, we are closing the Elasticsearch service to new clusters. Existing customers keep running, and we will come to you about the migration rather than the other way round.

Why now

We said in 2021 that the relicensing was a real reduction in what customers could count on, and that the answer was an engine anyone may run. Then we built the service and waited to find out whether the fork would hold.

It held. OpenSearch has had two years of independent maintenance and the customers who moved have not asked to move back. Keeping a second engine alive on our side now costs attention that is better spent on one, and it quietly signals that we think the licensing question was a phase. We don’t.

Nothing breaks today, and no date is being set for you. Our team will get in touch to plan the move.

Indices, mappings and settings come across, we do the work with you, and the cutover is scheduled around your traffic. If your timing is awkward, say so and we will work to it.
