Advanced tier clusters are generally available

Advanced tier OpenSearch clusters are open to everyone. Eight vCPU, 64 GiB and 2 TB of NVMe per node, launched from the console with no quota request and no waiting for an approval.

Per node, at this tier

• 8 vCPU
• 64 GiB memory, which is as much per node as OpenSearch has any use for, because the JVM heap should stay under 32 GB and the rest belongs to the page cache
• 2 TB NVMe storage, which is the only kind of storage under any of our tiers
• Up to 10 data nodes, where the smaller tiers stop at two

No approval step

The tier used to need a quota request and a person on our side to approve it. That is gone. Pick it in the create form and the cluster builds.

Combined with SSO, which landed last week, Advanced is the tier for a cluster that several teams depend on and somebody has to answer for. It is still a fraction of what the metered services charge for a comparable workload, and the pricing page shows the working.
